One always reads that the slits it the side of 18th century gowns were for the woman to reach her pockets which were hanging from the waist, unde rthe skirt. Well, I'm now reading "My amorous adventures", memories by a swedish nobleman from the 18th century and I see that they could have other uses too.

ETA: And I don't know if can stand 300 pages of porn just to find the clothing details.

It's rather boring really - or maybe I'm not the target group. It was never intended to be published and when the manuscript reached the national librarian in 1916 they woved never to do that, due to the nature of the manuscript. By 1972, however, it was printed, with some comments.

The only porn site I ever joined was one that specialized in pre-1960s pornography. It was a really invaluable insight into underwear from the Victorian era on up through the 50s-- I really learned a lot-- but yeah, I didn't keep the membership up very long.
I did see one medieval drawing-- excerpted on a costume site as an example of a style-- showing I believe a 15th-century scene, featuring a man with his hand put through the lower part of the front opening of a woman's kirtle. Which is how I imagine the encounter you're describing probably went.

LOL I probably have a higher porn tolerance, but a much lower Swedish comprehension level.
