OK girls and boys! I've wanted this type of tudor headwear for almost a decade now. I know there are at least two Holbein portraits with this bonnet-coif combination too, but I can't find any on the internet. When you look at the portraits the bonnets doesn't seem to have any seams and look very much like oversized berets. So I think; knitting a huge beret from white wool and then felt it. What do you all say about that theory? Marion? Anyone?

PS. I know it's sort of ugly but I want silly hats.

I reckon knitting it would be fabulous:) How many extant knitted flat caps are there? At least two I'm sure. I think there's one on bildindex, and I'm sure there is at least one in PoF...

I love those hats too:) I was going to make one after making my final lettice cap.

Not really into the French Hoods, not Gable hoods, but the flat caps and lettice caps just are too groovy.

I think its a knitted hat that's been felted too, it certainly looks like that to me.

I can think of 6 extant knitted hats, flat and other types right off the top of my head, so it was definitly a technology that was in use.

Do you have a pattern for a baret? If not I can send you one that I have written up, only it will have to wait until next week as I am currently on vacation visiting my grandma.

funny, me too am considering knitting a flat cap and felt it! although not a tudor one, but an earlier 15th C one. one with ear flaps, like the one seen on 15th C craftsmen. i know, not exactly like the one you want to knit, but at least somewhat related ;) and also, i am not planning an exact re-creation, just a warm and nice hat fot everyday winter wear.

right now i'm knitting swatches wich i have measured and counted. only felting left to do! been trying out a few different yarn combinations and stiches. ordinary stockinette (spelling?) and some "två-ändsstickning" (trad. scandinavian technique using two strands of yarn, alternated. creating a stiffer and more fabric-like knitting). at the moment i am in favour of the "två-ändsstickning", since it even unfelted creates such a good surface. the only drawback i can see is that it will take me more than double the amount of time to knit it. i was planning to finish it before christmas... therefor i've also been trying to combine the two-ply wool with a thin mohair yarn to create a little fuzzy surface, which might enhance the felting. might also work, and this enables me to use the ordinary faster knitting techniques. am using a 2-ply yarn on needles 3mmm. also been thinking about lining the flat cap with a softer and less itchy yarn, like alpacka.

I would love to learn "Tvåändsstickning", but I'm not a very experienced knitter.

No, I don't have a pattern and I would love yours. But don't feel rushed, this project is more in the line of "Maybe I'll do it sometime during 2005" than something I want to do soon.

except for casting on (which i never manage to remember from time to time) it's not very complicated at all, really! it actually makes all kinds of colourwork and patterning much easier and enables at least me to keep a nice and even tension of all the floating yarns on the reverse... if you don't know anyone else in the gothenburg area who's into that knitting technique i'll gladly show you sometime? and as it is at the moment, i happen to visit my childhood city a bit more frequently than before;)

also, i managed to teach myself the technique from a library book. i'm quite convinced you'll get the hang of it easily too.

Actually Anna/Ingeborg, who's quite obsessed with knitting, has repeatedly said that she wants to learn tvåändsstickning and I would like to learn it too, so if you have time while you're down here we would be really grateful.

Silly hats are underestimated. Actually, all kinds of silly stuff (hats, hairdos, colours etc) are underestimated!

I like your theory, and if you ever decide to make it, I'd be very interested in following the progress. :)
