There have been two cases of chickenpox at Maja's preschool and we have aniticipated her getting it and today we found five little red dots on her. Chickenpox is really good to get early, since it's much easier then. I had it when I was fifteen and had to stay in hospital because they suspected meningitis. The rest of the family has also had it so I don't think it will be much trouble. There is also some kind of stomach bug going around. Both Rickard and Maja have been affected somewhat, but I'm okay. I just have a toothache from my wisdom tooth trying to get out and itchy eyes from allergies.

My mother had a penpal when I was little and got the chickenpox. She wrote about it but instead of chicken pox she wrote small pox. She never heard from that penpal again.

Hope Maja will feel better soon.

I remember being almost the only kid still well enough to go to school in fifth grade, when everyone but me got it. I'd had it when I was a baby.

Son had chicken pox when he was 3, and it seemed to waft over him without much trouble. But my Mum had it when I had it as a child, and she was so ill it was scary.

I have a wisdom tooth troubling me at times as well. Two are out, and the other two sits staright, but they are a pain to get. My dentist said that you always gget them before 25, which hasn't been true for me, as I got them after 30.

I was so very relieved when my kids caught it when they were almost-four and almost-two. They were not all that ill; just obviously itchy and uncomfortable; my daughter still has a couple of little pock-scars here and there on her body. It is not a serious disease for a child, but...

My husband's nephew married his high school sweetheart right after their baby was born-- and when she turned three, their little child caught it and gave it to her 21-year-old mother. She ran a fever of over 104F (40C) for three weeks while it went down her esophagus to ravage her heart and lungs. If the heart/lung damage hadn't killed her first, she would have been left a vegetable.

The psychological damage to that child (now 15) has been catastrophic. Chicken pox is a horrible, terrible way to die as an adult.

How absolutely horrible. I've never heard of that before. I knew that meningitis is one of the side effects, from personal expeirence, and people do die from that, but I've never heard of anyone dying from the actual chicken pox.

It is a definite relief that she's getting it so young. I'm almost 33 and have never had chicken pox. I fully expect to get it when I'm 60, and die from it :/.

The vaccine works very well and lasts for ten years, just like tetanus boosters.

Please, PLEASE go get one from your doctor.

My grandmother had none of the "childrens' diseases" as we call them here. That's chickenpox, the measles, rubella, parotitis and whooping cough. She died at 81 from cancer (and old age)My mother has only had rubella, she will be sixty this year.

I figure I had rheumatic fever-- maybe that was my "get out of chicken pox free" card...

I managed to get it 3 times. Once at 7, 12 and again when I was 13. I think it was. The doctors said that I didn’t get enough of it the first two times but he wasn’t exactly sure why I was able to do that. The last put me in bed for 2 weeks. My dad caught it from me the last time and it put him in the hospital with pneumonia for a week.

My brother had it at 4 and at 15 - and he had a lot of spots and itching and fever both times. It seems to be quite common that people get it more than once.

Is a vaccination for chicken pox not required where you are? Kyle had to have it when he was 1 yr old. It is a new vaccine. I hope Maja doesn't itch to much!

No, chickenpox is such a benign illness for children so I guess they don't think it's worth vaccinating for.
And actually there aren't any required vaccinations. There's a free of charge vaccination programme (actually, all medical care for children under 20 is free of charge, including dental care)that covers rubella, parotitis, whooping cough, measles, haemophilus influenzae, polio, diphteria, tetanus, and if you belong to risk groups tb and hepatitis. Over 90 % of the children follow this programme, but there's no requirement.

When I was little, my mom used to rush me around to all of the chicken-poxy kids' houses in an attempt to get me infected. I never did. It frustrated her no end. My kids have been exposed numerous times (although not the way I was exposed) and my son got 5 spots and my daughter got 2. They have never gotten it again. When they got them I asked the dr for the gamma globulin shot so I wouldn't contract the disease, and he refused. He said he'd rather I got them at 31 (my then-age) than at 90. I, being my typical smartalec self, asked if that meant I was guaranteed to live until 90. He looked at me blankly. I don't think he understood me.

I got mumps during the summer I was attending a special summer school for gifted kids. I was more miserable missing the classes than I was from the illness.

I remember getting innoculated for Rubella before taking my year in Italy, without incident. I also got Typhoid and Typhus innoculations the same day as each other around that time, and had a nasty reaction to one of them. I was delirious with a high fever for about 3 days, as sick as I've ever been with anything. I shudder to think what would have happened if I had gotten the wild version of that disease.

I don't get sick often. I don't have time to be sick. But I'm a real wimp when I do get sick.

I hope Maja feels fine soon.

Awwwww, poor honey. It is good to get it early but the poor dears suffer from it. :-( Has she already had a vaccination for it? Claire got it after being vaccinated soit was very mild, but the porr little babies that were younger than 1 year hadn't been vaccinated and were just covered in little itchy spots.

I had chicken pox in 2nd grade for 2 weeks, in my ears, down my throat, inside my nose & eyelids. I still remember being so mad that my best friend was sick for only 2 days. I have scars to this day and my teeth were stained slightly yellow from the fever.

I hope Maja recovers quickly.
