As some of you know I go by the name Aleydis van Vilvoorde in the diverse medieval societies I belong to; I have for almost 15 years now. Since I'm going to try and register my arms I will also try to register my name, but for this I need documentation and I wonder how much. Aleydis was a not unusual name in the dutch/flemish-speaking areas (it's a variety of the same name as the german Adelheid), but can also be found for example in a Swedish 15th century document. Since the rest of the name is flemish the swedish document probably isn't om much use. But Aleydis was the name of a popular flemish saint who lived in the 13th century, so I wonder if a reference to a good catholic calendar of saints would be enough?
As for Vilvoorde, would a Belgian history book be enough to prove that the town (now a suburb of Brussels) indeed did exist in the Middle Ages?
It's really not a complicated name, it's just a female name and a reference to where she comes from.

Yes, on all accounts. Name (of) locative, with the documented proof of both having existed within period/place, should be enough - or at least it is in the East Kingdom. :)

Maybe the history is listed on the town's official website?

I'm not sure that that is enough, [livejournal.com profile] armillary had trouble with "Najac", which is a well known 13th century castle in France.

Searching in the Ordinary and Armorial oanda.sca.org there has been one Aleydis registered (in March of 2004).

The Acadamy of St. Gabriel (www.s-gabriel.org) has three listings of the name.

I hope that doesn't mean that I can't use the name Aleydis, I've gotten quite used to it. But SCA rules are a mystery to me.

just make sure you don't tell them that you want it specific to a time and/or place: they would then fail you if they thought your name didn't match where you want it from! (even if it works for all the other things, like not conflicting with other people's names and being reasonably period otherwise.)

http://www.keesn.nl/name13/en4_list_f.htm dates aleydis to 1250 to 1300
a printout of this will work for the given name

saints names will work as long as they were canonized in period

http://www.keesn.nl/names/en6_an_byn.htm discusses bynames including locatives

something documenting the town (such as a history book) to period and the spelling if possible will work for a locative byname.. i'm not sure how best to form it but i don't speak dutch examples of the form you want (van ---) from your timeframe would be ideal.

checking the authenticity box would just mean your could be changed to a more authentic form if one was found. I do recommend allowing minor changes, so spelling can be adjusted if necessary.

you will definately be clear of Aleydis de Vries, registered in 2004 as the byname will be different

hope this helps

Just remember that the town had to be called that in "our" time. I had trouble with la Fère because it was called about ten diffrent things between 600-1600 and none of them were la Fère. In the end we found a chap in Provance called de la Fère and everything sorted itself out.
