Because of an upcoming Halloween party with a greek or roman pantheon theme I have made a new peplos, from fine red wool and with a linen tabletwoven ribbon sewn to the upper edge. I will wear other fibulae, since these are a) nordic/germanic and b) something I want to reserve for ritual dress. I will also have a helmet and a Medusa badge, since I'm portraying Athena.

The peplos may be one of the least sexy styles you can find - at least with modern eyes. This is especially true if you, as I do, wear it as it was worn, i.e: without a bra.

Unsexy-- moderately, and so I've never tried one, but the red color and bared shoulders are quite striking in this example!
Also I'm jealous that you get to go to so many awesome theme parties. :)

The thing is that there hasn't been any for years and years and now they pop up all the time. Except that this one may be cancelled due to too few people attending :(

I agree with dragonlady above. Despite the sack-like qualities of the peplos you still manage to make it look good.

It's all about the attitude it seems, and you have that aplenty :)

Thanks. I think it helps when it's hubby taking the photo :)

You still manage to rock it. But yeah, I always have trouble with bra-less styles.

Is this too early for a strophium?

Is that a breastband?
I have no idea if they were used in ancient Greece, I was actually going to ask around here on LJ.

I think that depends on how well the fabric drapes. With most fabric, yes, the result is god-awful (at least to my modern eyes). But if you can find a thin enough fabric that clings to your body in the right way, it can be rather inticing. I have one peplos made from a fabric the vendor swore was linen. I don't believe her, frankly, but I bought the stuff anyway, and it looks just wonderful in wear.

Sounds good. This wool is actaully a bit sheer up close, so it may have some effect too.

It looks good, and I think its neat how you take something so academic and make it physically real. Its very interesting.
