My sweet girls in Visby
Aug. 23rd, 2008 08:29 pmValeria and Vendela at the market the first Sunday. It was hot so I was a kind mother and let them have linen dresses.

Aug. 23rd, 2008 11:01 amAt the baron and baroness of Styringheim's court, during the Princely investiture, all children present were called forward. Maja went with her dad and got a lovely hand made glass bead which she treasures.

Two photos
Aug. 12th, 2008 08:49 amThere will be a story about this year's Visby medieval week too, but I'm busy working, unpacking and doing laundry, so it will take a few days.
Here are, however, two photos.

Aargh! I can't make up my mind!
Jul. 24th, 2008 03:20 pmFirst I should tell that I have too much garb, despite some being too small or being and despite me selling off quite a lot. That means, apart from storage problems, that there are at least 4 eras/areas I could wear for a whole week and quite a few more I have more than one complete outfit from. This makes it very hard to decide what to bring to the Visby medieval week.
Until like five years ago my principle was to only dress in one time/area for the whole week, but I realized that I found that restricting. Still it is easier to pack (and takes less space) if you limit yourself to two periods, since you can do a lot with accessories.
But I really want three this year:
1. The Uvdal gown is coming along, because I'm giving a lecture on it. I think I will enter it in the A&S competition too, if I manage to make the text on the web page into documentation on paper.
2. Both my family and a lot of people from our group dress in early german 14th century, and it would feel good to match them; especially matching my family. I have so many cottes and surcoats that I will have to choose which to take. The green work cotte from the Maciejowski Bible of corse, but I haven't decided which others.
3. I, Rickard, Valeria and Maja will wear 16th century at least for one court.
The problem is what is to be my everyday/working garb. I want to bring lots of 16th century, but that conflicts with my wish to match my family. And I can't bring everything, the packing space is limited. The sensible thing would be to just bring 16th century for court, but I want to wear this now that it's not too tight anymore (it's actually too loose) and the blue peasant too.
It's hard to have so much good garb.

A good thing with growing big girls
May. 24th, 2008 07:57 pm- They grow out of their old garb so I have to make new
+ They are tall enough to use my 13th/early 14th century garb. Since it's supposed to be loose it doesn't matter that I weigh a little more than 20 kilos more than they do.
This means that what I have to make for the twins is:
1 shift each
2 pairs of sewn wool stockings each
And Rickard has to make shoes for Valeria, since Vendela can borrow a pair from
herzeloyde.
Valeria wants 16th century garb so that's probably want to start on next, or at least after the shifts.
Of course Maja has grown out of virtually everything she owns, so for her I need to make both a couple of new shifts, a couple of stockings and at least two new tunics. And a hood I think. If there is time I will make her green 16th century overgown.

Photo of me and
armillary
Aug. 19th, 2007 08:31 pmThere are new Visby photos in SKA Uma's archive now. I found this one showing me and
armillary being called up to the baron and baroness of Styringheim to receive our prices in the A&S competition. And they were fabulous prices. I got a whole "hide" of real parchment, hard to find and expensive, and some ink (it can be seen in the following photo) and
armillary got 10 hand made nails and a piece of oak from Gotland.

So, how did my clothes sale go?
Aug. 14th, 2007 10:31 amAs you may remember I had decided to sell off some clothes during Visby medieval week.
It went okay. The red corset was sold to my friend Malin and it fit her just perfect. The grey effigy corset wasn't sold, so I brought it home. Neither was the short grey corset, so I donated it to the auction to raise money for the Prince' and Princess' traveling fund. It was bought by a lady in a quite nice Tudor dress and french hood. My grey jacket was bought by the queen of Nordrike and this dress

was bought by
historian31, aka Teddy's friend Paul. I wasn't there when he tried it on, but according to both him and hubby it fit him, and I'm sure he looked much less dumpy in it. (This was short after the birth of Maja.)
I bought fabric, a cheap recorder for Maja, hand made sewing needles, indigo dyed silk yarn and a flea fur (whole, dead marten) for the money.

And I came second place in an A&S competition held in the camp, with my hand sewn effigy stays and rope farthingale. And, much to his surprise,

It's late and I'm tired. I have lots to do tomorrow, besides unpacking, washing, and drying soaked tents, so I probably won't write much until Tuesday. But tonight I give you some photos. I don't have the energy to read one week's worth of posts either, so if it's something you think I need to know; post here.
It rained quite a lot, but not all the time and mostly in the nights and mornings.

Selling off corsets
Jul. 30th, 2007 04:48 pmI've decided to sell off three of my corsets during the medieval week. A description in swedish and (dark) pictures, as well as prices, can be found on this pdf-file. The corsets in question are ( these )
The two first have never been used and the last has only been used once.
So if you know any larger women looking for corsets and coming to the Visby medieval week, please alert them. I will also sell a nice winter 12th century dress in herringbone wool twill in red/yellow, lined in blue wool, with side lacing and hand sewn eyelets
ETA:I tried to put up a notice in the Nordmark (SCA in Sweden) forum too, but I think it ate it. The form for creating new threads is very confusing and has strange commandos in swedish that really don't make sense. I tried to post, but I think it disappeared. I actually hope it did, because it would be very embarrassing if it showed up in any other forum than the intended.

OK, I'm crazy
Jul. 28th, 2007 09:54 pmI did start on a new 16th century dress. Bodice is drafted, cut, sewn together, trimmed (just a narrow gold cord along the neckline and armscyes, sewn on while watching Elizabeth and chatting with
herzeloyde). I am now working on the lacing holes while watching Grease. The skirt pieces are zig-zagged and tomorrow I will cut a lining from cotton sheets or something, this is a low cost, quick job. Then there's sleeves and stuff, and the skirt will have a strip of heavier fabric both at the bottom and at the waist to make it stand out more. I would love to make one of those really small, silly bonnets too, but I don't know if there will be time.

Finishing things for Visby
Jul. 27th, 2007 11:15 pmI have now finished the two new curtains/hangings (1,5 x 2 metres, hand hemming all around and ten tying cords attached to each) for the pavilion and another linen cap for Maja, in case there actually is sun in Visby. Rickard has cut out the pieces for Maja's new shoes, it's a 13th century model, though you see it later too. I think he will start sewing tomorrow. Making turn shoes doesn't really take that much time, especially not that small shoes.
I'm still thinking about whipping up something elegant and summery 16th century from rayon brocade. And I'll do it the simple way with hand sewing just for hems, attaching bodice linings and hooks and eyes. Maybe I'll even attach trim by machine ;) I have some nice ribbon where it won't show at all from the right side, unless you really rub your nose in it. Or maybe not, I can't remember when I last time was this indecisive about anything.
